In 2011, after 15 months in Iraq and 12 months in Afghanistan, Russell Davies was released from active military duty. But coming home didn’t bring immediate peace. As Russell found solace and community through kayaking, he knew that other veterans could experience the same. Soon, he was inviting veterans to his home in Pocatello, Idaho, introducing them to mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and kayaking through his nonprofit, Professional Transformation Sports Development, or PTSD. “PTSD, its whole purpose is to let veterans find an escape, an outdoor escape. There’s so many therapeutic aspects to it. It helped me tremendously, and I know it can help other veterans.” —Russell Davies, PTSD Founder Through PTSD, Russell Davies is helping veterans develop the skills they need to navigate the river and find healing through the outdoors.
