On June 26, 1996 a tragedy took place on a NOLS course in the Absaroka Range in Wyoming. It was day 24 of the course and a group of students, including Katy Brain were on their final expedition. During a stream crossing Katy and another student were swpt downstream. One student was able to struggle back to shore. Katy drowned in the river. The incident had a profound impact on NOLS. Andrew McCarthy, one the the instructors on the course returns to the site of the tragic accident twelve years later. He talks about the incident in the August/September issue of National Geographic Adventurer magazine.
