Gerry was a very special friend for Simon Gietl. A friend with whom he could talk about everything, but at the same time someone who was not afraid of silence. With Gerry it was a pleasure for Simon to make long term plans, pledges and promises: like opening a new route on a specific line they saw together. Gerry had a climbing accident during an expedition in Nepal, and never came back from the Nilgiri. Simon grieved his friend and found a way to honor him: “After what happened to Gerry it was very clear to me that I would not do the route on Cima Scotoni, because for me it was unthinkable to open it with someone else. But then I thought there might be another way to honor our pact: to open the route solo, bringing Gerry with me, in my heart. That’s how I went to Cima Scotoni”.
