I Tried Being a Porter on Africa’s Tallest Mountain | Superskilled with Eva zu Beck

Author(s): National Geographic
Video Release Date: January 2, 2025
Video Source: YouTube

Eva travels to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, where she joins a team of female high-altitude porters in an attempt to understand how they manage to carry heavy loads to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain. Although women have only recently joined the male porters in this line of work, they carry the same amount of weight (20 kilograms, or 44 pounds) as they supply tourist camps along the mountain routes. Eva takes on the challenge of replicating what the porters do, learning about their methods for altitude adaptation, strength training, and physical technique. This episode shows viewers that anyone can build up solid strength and endurance from scratch. In this empowering four-part series, Eva zu Beck investigates how we can all tap into our innate human skills, from building strength to developing endurance and cultivating our minds. With the help of inspiring locals, Eva takes on epic challenges to see if she can learn their skills—and find her own limits. Welcome to Superskilled.
