DescriptionCary, NC is seeking a passionate, organized, and adaptable outdoor recreation professional to join our team as an Outdoor Recreation Supervisor. This position will play a critical role in the planning and delivery of unique outdoor recreation experiences for citizens and families. The position is based at Fred G. Bond Metro Park, a 310-acre oasis in the middle of town which offers opportunities for many types of recreation including boating, archery, and a challenge course.

The Outdoor Recreation Supervisor will be responsible for providing outdoor recreation programs, classes, and events; supervising boat house operations; delivering high-quality Bond Park visitor experiences; and supporting the park’s day-to-day operations.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community and Recreation Services Manager. Supervision is exercised over four to thirty part-time staff, depending on the season.

Typical Tasks

Supervises the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of diverse, Town-wide outdoor/adventure programs;
Administers and develops the Cary Junior Olympic Archery Program, Archery Club, and related tournaments;
Maintains the Boathouse including maintenance, equipment, staffing, operations, and customer contact; inspects the Boating equipment and either makes repairs or contracts for repairs to be made; ensures the safety of Boathouse operations during programs;
Supports the Challenge Course Manager in the operation, maintenance, and program delivery of Bond Park Challenge Course;
Develops and delivers training for Outdoor Recreation, Archery, Boathouse Operation and other assigned areas;
Supervises the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of special events for the boathouse, park, and Outdoor Recreation. Primary events may include 4th of July, Fishing Tournament, Dogs with Dad, Archery Tournaments, Take a Child Outside Day/Week, Pumpkin Flotilla, and Pedal Boats and Soda Floats;
Supervises full-time contract outdoor administrator and temporary part-time staff (boathouse attendants, archery instructors, and outdoor instructors);
Develops, coordinates, and supervises program schedule and associated registration procedures;
Recruits, hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates temporary staff, program instructors, contract staff, and/or volunteers;
Coordinates security of the facility with the police and fire departments;
Oversees the maintenance of facilities, ensuring that national standards are met and that facilities are clean, maintained, and stocked with supplies;
Establishes rules and procedures for efficient and effective operation of key program areas;
Makes recommendations in the budget process for operational needs;
Participates in determining equipment needs;
Oversees program data entry and information pertaining to class participation, registration, and facility revenues;
Maintains knowledge of organizations, trends, and issues in recreation programming pertinent to program areas;
Implements the program evaluation process and tracks level of participant satisfaction;
Projects, requests, tracks and oversees budgetary needs for programs and events;
Evaluates and documents program information by tracking participation, fees, and related data and reports findings;
Promotes all classes and events through marketing guidelines;
Prepares promotional material pertaining to facility use, fees, policies, etc.;
Coordinates and produces brochure information in the Program Registration system; proofs and submits information to the brochure graphic designer and marketing specialist;
Manages website content for all related programs and events;
Manages food truck contracts for events/programs by Bond Park staff;
Coordinates social media posts and submits to marketing staff;
Assists with the implementation of other Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources programs and special events to support a “OneCary” culture.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesComprehensive knowledge of outdoor recreation trends and programming best practices; general knowledge of boat rentals; general knowledge of concession stand operations; general knowledge of basic small craft maintenance (canoes, kayaks, and sailboats); general knowledge of security practices; general knowledge of budgeting; general knowledge of common computer software; skilled in interpersonal communication; ability to effectively supervise others; ability to deliver programming and training on a wide range of outdoor recreation topics, including boating, survival, fire building, nature, orienteering, archery, etc.; ability and willingness to explore and learn new computer software quickly; ability to manage a variety of customer, staff, and work demands at once; ability to interact tactfully and professionally with the public, coworkers and employees; ability to analyze and improve processes and procedures; ability to work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends and holidays (including being on-site at least two of four of weekends during the primary season, March through October).

Minimum and Preferred QualificationsAny combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education, or a related field and at least 3 years of experience working in public recreation programs.

Requires at least 2 years supervisory experience with full-time or part-time staff.

Certifications:
Required CPR and First Aid (or willing to get within 6 months)
Preferred USA Archery Level 2 or higher
Preferred ACCT Level 2 (or ability to achieve within 1 year)
Preferred CPR/First Aid Instructor
Preferred small craft instructor in canoeing, kayaking and/or sailing

Physical Requirements
Work in this class requires significant physical ability and stamina due to the assignment of direct supervision of the boathouse and outdoor programs. Work requires the employee to lift moderately heavy to heavy items and be able to demonstrate exercises that will be performed on the ropes course, including working at height. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.

Conditions of Employment
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
