Job Description

Crew members will work under a designated crew leader along with a small project crew on a
variety of TTF dirt trail construction and maintenance projects. This position provides support
work to the Truckee Trails trail building and maintenance program as a member of a trail crew.
This position conducts erosion, sediment, and trail maintenance work including construction of
water bars, rolling dips and rock removal; brushing; tread maintenance; and removing down
trees. The position also conducts installation, repair and maintenance of trail protection structures
and signs.  Daily use and maintenance of hand tools (crosscut saw, rock bar, pick mattock,
McLeod, double jack, loppers, Pulaski, grip hoist, etc.), power tools (drills, chainsaws, skid
steers, mini excavators). This position requires working around heavy machinery and
participating in weekly safety meetings and Job Hazard Analysis discussions.

Job Requirements

 Must enjoy and be willing to ride mountain bikes, hike, and walk regularly for long
distances. Must have a positive attitude, be a team player, and be willing to stay
motivated during long hot days in the field.
 Six months of general work experience that includes successfully working and
communicating with co-workers/supervisors and completing tasks independently; OR
one season of experience that was at least three months in duration in forestry aid or
technician work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved
the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices
combined with knowledge of forestry/environmental restoration operations and
equipment; farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and
water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment and that provided a
basic understanding of land use; or forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression
work; OR successful completion of one year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of study
above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in any combination of courses
such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management,
engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences; OR a
combination of experience and education to meet the total experience; AND the ability to
work outdoors in conditions that include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, heavy
rains, and inclement weather.

Working Conditions

Work will involve construction and completion of projects in both local and remote locations on
the Tahoe National Forest (including wilderness areas) or other lands in the greater Truckee area.
Travel to work sites includes vehicle travel over rough roads, mountain biking with a bob trailer
loaded with tools or backpacking and hiking for long distances in steep terrain carrying tools,
fuel, chainsaws, water, and food. The work requires hiking and climbing in steep, uneven terrain,
exposure to adverse weather (heat, cold/snow, wind, dust, smoke) and insects, performing

Chainsaw Certification crosscut saw certification, PCTA Trail Skills college weekend training,
First Aid/CPR training.

Housing

Free Primitive camping may be available (vault toilets, $ showers nearby) Limited cell phone
service and no WIFI at this location.

Compensation

Hourly rate from $18-$19.50/hour, depending on experience, with the opportunity for mid-season
increase and season-end bonus. Position includes uniforms and a personal equipment stipend of
$250.
