Job Description

Are you the Kitchen Manager (aka Kitchen Unicorn!) we have been searching for? Experience Learning, located on beautiful Spruce Knob in West Virginia, is seeking out a Kitchen Manager for a nine-month position, with the possibility of full-time year-round employment for the right person.

Experience Learning is a non-profit Outdoor Education Center located in the remote wilderness of the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Located just below the highest point in the state, our location is prime for hiking, backpacking, caving, and rock climbing!  At Experience Learning we serve students and teachers in both our residential and field programs, as well as large events throughout the season. As the Kitchen Manager, you are the leader responsible for ensuring the team delivers a safe, high-quality food experience for our guests. From school groups to summer camps to special events, the Kitchen Manager will be able to use their creative abilities to design a menu that fits each group’s specific needs.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure an understanding of and adherence to applicable food health and safety standards
  • Manage pre-season set up and end of season takedown
  • Create individualized menus
  • Ensure that meals are prepared and served for groups of varying sizes, including cooking and baking
  • Training and managing staff as well as delegating tasks
  • Ability to manage severe allergies and dietary restriction for all our participants
  • Managing and ordering food and supplies
  • Ensuring facilities & equipment are cleaned & maintained daily to a high standard
  • Supervise kitchen cleanliness and sanitation and ensure staff and facilities are compliant with food handling, safety regulations, and health codes
  • Attend staff meetings with Directors and Managers
  • Adhere to the operating budget
  • Assisting the Program Officer with annual budgeting and managing cash flow
  • Work closely with Course Directors for field food packs
  • Food order submitted weekly
  • Work towards a goal of using more organic, locally produced foods as budget and availability allows.

Required Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • At least one-year of experience meal planning, cooking, and baking for large groups
  • Leading or mentoring multiple people in a dynamic working environment
  • Must possess or acquire Food Handlers card
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to accommodate dietary restrictions and manage severe allergies

Employee Perks and Benefits:

  • Housing is offered, but not required. If you choose to live offsite, you can work part-time from home (budgets, food order, creating menus, etc.) and part-time onsite (preparing/cooking meals and cleaning, putting the food order away, etc).
  • Meals provided during programming
  • Social Security match (7.65% of gross salary)
  • Temporary or seasonal employees with a contract of more than 130 days will accrue one day per month and up to a maximum of five days of paid time off.
  • Accrue one sick day per month worked
