Job Description

The Outdoor Recreation Assistant will work approximately 29 hours a week from approximately Aug 1 – May 15 with potential to extend. Pay range based on total duration of employment & funding (approximately $15-18 per hour.) This position may be utilized as an internship. The Outdoor Recreation Assistant will gain experience in all aspects of operating and managing a multi-faceted outdoor recreation program within a university Campus Recreation Department. The Outdoor Recreation Assistant will receive an area of focus based on program needs, skills set, experience and interest. The Outdoor Recreation Assistant will also gain an understanding of the role outdoor recreation plays within Student Affairs, the Health and Wellness Thematic Area and Campus Recreation. The Tribe Adventure Program (Outdoor Recreation) includes an indoor climbing facility, the W&M Challenge Course, the Matoaka Boathouse, the Tribe Adventure Program Trips (1-4 events per week), and the Pathways Pre-orientation program (3 weeks in Aug.) Required Qualifications:

– High school graduate or equivalent.
– Current First Aid & CPR Certification OR the ability to obtain it within the first month of employment.
– Working knowledge (typically 1-3 years of experience) in outdoor recreation.

Preferred Qualifications:

– Degree such as an associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field.
– Wilderness First Aid or First Responder certification.
– Verifiable certification in outdoor disciplines such as Site-specific Challenge Course Facilitator Certification, ACCT Challenge Course Practitioner Certification, AMGA or PCIA Top Rope Cert., Climbing Wall Instructor Cert. American Canoe Association Instructor Cert., Leave-No-Trace Trainer/Master Educator Cert.
– Experience supervising.

Availability:  This job will require 29 hours per week, occasional weekends and nights.
