POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) is housed in the Division of Student Affairs. RecWell fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. We promote lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs and resources. RecWell offers comprehensive recreation and wellness programming including; fitness, aquatics, informal recreation, outdoor adventures, competitive sports, nutrition, health promotion/advocacy and well-being education. With Health and Wellbeing as a major theme for the University’s strategic plan, the Department strives to provide opportunities that enhance student success.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Assistant Director of Team Development Programs will serve as a member of the department’s outdoor recreation and experiential education team (Outdoor Adventures). Historically, Team Development and Outdoor Adventures have functioned as standalone programs within RecWell. To establish a more comprehensive and synergistic outdoor recreation and education unit within RecWell, Team Development Programs will be intentionally aligned within the Outdoor Adventures program. This integration will foster a robust and dynamic team of outdoor and experiential educators responsible for providing a variety of high-quality, high impact programs guided by the principles of outdoor and experiential education and known best practices. By closely aligning resources and expertise, this area is poised to strengthen RecWell’s mission of promoting lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs. The Assistant Director of Team Development Programs will have the unique opportunity to assist with the strategic vision and leadership of this new program structure. 
The Outdoor Adventures team is responsible for developing and implementing a shared vision guided by departmental goals that are aligned with the Division of Student Affairs’ strategic plan. This area plays a key role with leveraging specific strategies around health and wellbeing as well as student learning and success. Outdoor recreation and experiential education programming are critical to RecWell’s ability to further promote social, physical, environmental, and career dimensions of well-being for the UNCG community. In addition, Team Development Programs is uniquely positioned to contribute to student learning and student success through the development of experiential-based, high-impact programs that prepare students to be effective team members – a key competency employers are seeking from college graduates entering the workplace. 

Ideal candidates will possess the skills and experience necessary to successfully manage the primary responsibilities for this position, which include: training and leading a team of facilitators and a graduate assistant; overseeing program administration which includes scheduling and contracting programs, budget management, and program assessment; managing the facilities and equipment for the high and low challenge courses at UNCG’s Piney Lake; designing and implementing a variety of team development program offerings which includes open enrollment workshops, mobile programming, and adventure-based programming; and developing relationships and strategic partnerships within the campus community and with external clients. 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Administration:

  • Provide strategic direction for all aspects of team development programs.
  • Maintain all requirements and standards for the program’s Association of Experiential Education (AEE) accreditation.
  • Coordinate hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, and supervision of a graduate assistant, multiple program assistants, and 20+ facilitators (student and community).
  • Develop, implement, and assess policies and procedures for all team development programs and facilities.
  • Administer assessment, evaluation, and mitigation of risk for team development programs and facilities.
  • Manage all program scheduling, contracting, and client communications.
  • Provide fiscal oversight of all program budgets and revenue generation goals.
  • Conduct assessment of program learning outcomes for all user groups.
  • Coordinate print, web, and social media marketing and promotion of team development programs for the UNCG community and external clients.
  • Assist with staffing of group reservations at Piney Lake lodges.

Programming:

  • Utilize an integrative approach to design and facilitate experiential-based team development programs that meet the needs of the UNCG students, faculty, staff, and external clients. Program offerings include: the high and low challenge courses and elements at UNCG’s Piney Lake property; mobile team development programming; and adventure-based team development programming.
  • Work programs occurring evenings, weekends, and university breaks.
  • Develop and implement programs, workshops, and recruit campus partnerships to enhance students’ competencies in becoming effective communicators, team members, critical thinkers, as well as effective decision-makers at UNCG and into their future professional careers and endeavors.
  • Work collaboratively with other RecWell staff and campus partners to develop special event programming at Piney Lake.

Facility and Equipment Management:

  • Manage internal and external inspections of all challenge course structures and equipment.
  • Manage equipment inventory and procurement of equipment.
  • Assist with facility maintenance projects and routine upkeep for grounds and facilities utilized by the team development program.  

Additional:

  • Work collaboratively within the Outdoor Adventures team to develop and integrate new initiatives and programs that are mutually beneficial and enhance team development program offerings.
  • Assist with other areas of outdoor recreation and education programming and administration which may include the indoor climbing wall, adventure trips and clinics, outdoor equipment rental program, and Piney Lake informal recreation.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees and work teams.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • A minimum of three years of experience working in the challenge course / experiential education field.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully facilitating low and high challenge course programs.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain within first 30-days)
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with program assessment / evaluation.
  • Experience with staff hiring, training, and supervision.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Driver’s license.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in recreation, education, or related field.
  • Direct experience in program administration and facilitation within a collegiate challenge course / team building programming.
  • Marketing, promotions, and communications experience.
  • Experience with inspection and maintenance of challenge courses.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Current involvement in one or more of the following professional organizations: Association of Experiential Education (AEE); Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE); Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT); NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation.

About the Department of Recreation and Wellness
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Department of Recreation & Wellness completed construction and began operations of the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness (216,000sq ft.) in August 2016. The department currently consists of 26 full-time staff, 11 graduate assistants, and 200+ student employees. Team Development Programs has an office suite located within the Kaplan Center. Outdoor Adventures operations in the Kaplan Center also includes an indoor climbing and bouldering wall, an equipment rental center, and serves as a home base for the adventure trip program. In addition to the Kaplan Center, Team Development Programs have a home base at Piney Lake. Piney Lake encompasses 40+ acres of beautiful park-like property situated eight miles south of campus. The two lodges and our low, high, and expedition challenge course are also located at Piney Lake. Piney Lake is open for informal recreation Saturdays and Sundays March through October.
