JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the Associate Director of Adventure Programs in Recreation and Wellness, the Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the administration, development, strategy and implementation of the Outdoor Center and adventure programming for the campus community. Specific responsibilities include supporting the day-to-day administration of the Outdoor Center, equipment rental program, serving as an instructor for outdoor education courses, and supporting program marketing. This position helps coordinate the outfitting of adventure trips and ensures appropriate inventory for the Adventure Program store. Using advanced technical and professional knowledge, this position will implement university and department policies and procedures.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
Administrative Responsibilities 25%
- Review and administer services, make recommendations, and influence decisions issues with regards to rental and outfitting operations.
- Collect and analyze data to prepare reports on user statistics, membership, and inventory control.
- Assist with the administration of financial processes.
- Maintain rental center, store, and trip outfitting inventory to optimize availability to the general public as well as assuring availability for academic course offerings.
- Execute cleaning protocols for returned equipment rentals prior to re-shelving.
- Maintain records for chemical solutions for industrial cleaning equipment.
- Maintain library and resource center. Purchase new books and resources to be maintain most recent professional information relevant to the Adventure Program.
Staff Management 25 %
- Recruit, hire, train, and coach staff, volunteers, student and temporary workers.
- Provide general guidance and counsel to students and contingent staff on policies, services and planning for future needs.
- Apprise students of opportunities and participate in related student recruitment and selection for Outdoor Center Leadership opportunities.
Community Engagement 25%
- Working in close collaboration with the Associate Director of Communications and Engagement, support and activate the development of strategic marketing activities for the Adventure Program, assist in planning and developing communication services, outreach functions, newsletters, and social media campaigns
- Serve as a basic information resource to other departments, divisions, and units about Outdoor Center related support opportunities.
- Assist with the planning and execution of major Adventure Program events such as SPOT, SWEAT, and CRAG.
- Plan and implement community events including but not limited to annual gear sale.
Academic Instructional Responsibilities (25%)
- Teach or assist in the teaching and administration of 10-12 course units per year.
- Write lecture material and handouts used in activity, seminar, and practicum course.
- Monitor expenses, budgets, and expenses of courses.
- Lead or facilitate instructor development workshops.
- Engage in critical analysis of student performance based on course outcomes.
- Analyze feedback from students and peers to improve teaching methodology.
- Change and adapt course material following current research and trends.
- Administer field sections in accordance with University and Adventure Program standards.
- Participate in Outdoor Education instructor meetings.
- Work collaboratively with peers within the Health and Human Performance academic program.
TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION, YOU WILL BRING:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred.
- Professional certifications and demonstrated experience in at least two of the technical skill areas (rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, mountaineering, canyoneering, backpacking.)
- Member of professional organizations such as AMGA, ACA, AORE, PCIA or equivalents.
- Instructor Certifications in professional organizations such as AMGA, ACA, PCIA or equivalents.
- Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of current risk management practices in recreation and outdoor education settings.
- A general understanding of all recreation and adventure programs.
- Ability to learn and understand compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
- Good teamwork with a strong attention to detail and follow through
- Ability to operate a vehicle for university purposes while possessing and maintaining an appropriate license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Occasionally work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
- May be required to travel to and work in a campsite and/or wilderness environment for up to 6 consecutive days.
- Travel on campus to schools/units as needed.
