The Department of Campus Recreation is looking for an enthusiastic team player to assist in the leadership and administration of all operational and programming aspects of a comprehensive university outdoor pursuits program.

Campus Recreational Services, reporting to the Division of Student Affairs, offers a multi-faceted program that is designed to encourage positive lifestyle choices and promote lifelong learning through both wellness and physical activity. The department manages the newly renovated Recreation Center at the East Gym and operates six core program areas: Fitness, Open Recreation, Intramurals, Club Sports, Outdoor Pursuits and Wellness Services. Through these programs, the department serves approximately 80% of undergraduate students, as well as graduate students, faculty and staff, alumni, University affiliates and community members.

Binghamton Outdoor Pursuits is dedicated to the promotion of physical activity, wellness and a deeper understanding of nature through experience-based outdoor, adventure and environmental education. Annually serving over 1,200 participants, ou instructors lead non-credit outdoor recreational activities, as well as teach credit-bearing courses under the Office of the Provost and University-Wide Courses.

The Program Coordinator for Outdoor Pursuits is not an entry-level position. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Program Coordinator will have the ability to function independently and to complete tasks with limited supervision, manage ambiguity, and work within collaborative decision-making structures as needed. The ideal candidate must have strong problem-solving skills and show high levels of adaptability. This position requires well-developed interpersonal skills, clear and consistent communication, including broad inter-departmental communication and an understanding of and an ability to work within the Binghamton University and Campus Recreational Services’ administrative procedures and policies. Well-rounded leadership abilities including performance evaluation skills and team development processes are critical.

This position will supervise a student staff of approximately 8 employees (office staff and activity leaders). Major duties will include program administration, personnel management, and programming.

 

 

Availability:  Responsibilities: Assist with the overall administration of and representation of the Outdoor Pursuits program within the department, division and campus. Oversee day-to-day office and equipment rental center duties. Facilitate office operations in participant registration and equipment rentals, oversee routine program promotion and contribute to the social media/marketing direction of all adventure activities, trips, OUT courses and challenge course programs. Participate in the recruiting, supervision, training and evaluation of Outdoor Pursuits undergraduate and graduate student staff members, both in the office and in the field settings. Responsible for training student staff in equipment utilization, storage and repair as well as outdoor leadership and skills workshops. Provide supervision, mentoring and evaluation of student staff as well as guidance with staffing issues. Teaching assigned credit classes and leading non-credit programs, providing logistics support of assigned programs. Specific assignments will be based on expertise in the field of adventure programming with leadership and teaching responsibilities to include but not limited to backpacking, cross-country skiing, winter camping, mountain biking, tree climbing, canoeing, sea kayaking, four-season back country travel and expedition leadership. Outdoor equipment procurement, maintenance and repair. Monitoring van fleet maintenance and scheduling; facilitate class and activity logistical planning. Assist in venue scouting and determination. Assist in the creation of the Outdoor Pursuits annual budget forecast by making purchasing recommendations and reviewing Rental Center revenues/expenses. Collect data and maintain statistical reports to track program participation and equipment utilization. Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in recreation, environmental studies or related field At least 2 years of post-graduate experience in outdoor trip guiding and educational leadership Wilderness First Aid certification and Level 1 Ropes certification, or the ability to obtain both within six months Must have knowledge, experience and proven abilities in student supervision, teaching and/or curriculum development Knowledge of industry standards to plan and lead courses/programs with best practices in specific technical areas. This position requires experience across multiple technical areas including but not limited to backpacking, cross-country skiing, winter camping, mountain biking, tree climbing, canoeing, sea kayaking, four-season back country travel and expedition leadership. Our ideal candidate will have proficiency in technical areas spanning all four areas Must have experience in planning and leading ropes course programming/team building activities Excellent mentoring skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse and wide range of students, professionals and community populations Ability to work with minimal supervision, to think laterally and undertake initiatives Must be in good physical condition, capable of extensive physical exertion and possess the emotional stability and maturity to care for others over extended time periods and in adverse circumstances Schedule varies based on programming and includes overnights, weekends, holidays and spend extended time in the field with student groups Must hold a valid/clean driver's license to operate a motor vehicle and the ability to drive program participants in a 15-passenger van including trailer with competency Preferred Qualifications: A Master's degree in Outdoor recreation, Environmental education, Environmental studies, Organizational development or similarly related field Wilderness First Responder certification or the ability to attain within six months Understanding of fiscal management systems including point of sale operations, reconciliation, purchase orders and invoicing
