Summary
Colorado Outward Bound School seeks to hire a competent, courageous, and creative leader for the Rocky Mountain Program logistics team! The Associate Program Director of Logistics (APD-L) will expand our mission and programming capabilities through the development and implementation of systems that support the Rocky Mountain Program operations in the areas of – leadership, budget, transportation, logistic staffing, accommodation, gear, and food. They will meet COBS’ program logistical needs through strong team leadership, oversight of purchasing, vehicle fleet, inventory, and budget.  The APD-L will report to the Rocky Mountain Program Director, work closely with other members of the COBS Operations Team, and serve on the Program Leadership Team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • A collaborative and active member of the Rocky Mountain Program (RMP) Leadership Team to determine and fulfill program needs, goals, and direction.
  • Ensure appropriate vehicle, program gear/equipment, basecamp supplies and food acquisition plans, budget, and systems are aligned to annual program needs.
  • Work with RMP Director to build the program calendar for all courses and advise regarding capacity, facility use, and hiring needs to support programs.
  • Develop and manage Logistics Manager(s) (LM) through regular check-ins and utilization of organizational performance and goals workbook. 
  • Oversee LM in develop and implementation of logistics staff training and development.
  • Hire and supervise kitchen and culinary support staff during peak program seasons.
  • Develop and implement systems for food and asset storage to reduce waste, damage, and losses.
  • Oversee field and base food inventory and systems meet students’ and staff’s dietary needs, while minimizing waste and maintaining budget criteria.
  • Oversee RMP vehicle fleet including registration, maintenance, equipment, driver training curriculum delivery, MVR clearance, DOT compliance, and accident reports.
  • Develop current software systems for tracking of COBS’ assets, such as vehicles, for notification and logging routine of maintenance, inspection, and checks.
  • Develop and maintain vendor relations pertaining to COBS logistics department; including transportation, technology, and gear/food/medical vendors.
  • Manage and track program purchasing for orders including vehicle, gear, first aid supplies, consumables, and food acquisition plans and systems based on the annual course schedule and budget.
  • Ensure program gear and equipment meet OBUSA and industry standards for best practices in use and care. Stay informed of and follow up on manufacturer recall or safety concerns.
  • Work with Facilities Manager to develop and implement basecamp opening/closing schedules and checklists based on program needs and facility functionality.
  • Ensure operational systems, facilities, and practices are compliant with Outward Bound policies, as well as state and local public health agencies. Facilitates and tracks routine inspections and follows up on issues of non-compliance. 
  • Maintains COBS’ food serving licenses and advises on regulatory changes. 
    Oversee and maintain tracking of occupational health and safety data, including Safety Data Sheets for the RMP. 
  • Work with the training team to ensure logistics and driving training systems and manuals are effective, updated, and maintained.
  • Work with hiring team to ensure accurate recording and tracking of staffs’ training, certifications, records, etc.
  • Follow and uphold all Colorado Outward Bound School policies and procedures.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in program emergency on-call rotation as assigned.
    Serve as a trainer during program training season. Deliver driver, logistics, and software training as assigned.
  • Work with APD of Logistics in Moab to determine areas of cross-program alignment and creates systems and processes for greater efficiency, inventory, tracking, training, and sharing of resources. Especially in areas of food and inventory systems. 
  • Advise and support selling, and turnover of vehicles, trailers, and other assets as needed.
  • Coordinate and host guests and events. Examples include Trail 100, special groups, service projects, board meetings, etc.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.

  • High proficiency using Excel and software tracking systems.
  • Strong management skills for a budget of $500K or more.
  • Excellent driving skills and record.
  • Education and Work Experience
  • 3-5 years in the field of logistics.
  • 2-3 years of team management and supervisory experience.
  • Adventure programming experience preferred.
  • Minimum Wilderness First Responder certification.
  • Must have held a driver’s license for min of 5 years.

Physical Requirements

  • Based in Leadville with some travel to other COBS sites required occasional.
  • This is a salary exempt position. Expect to work 5 out of 7 days with work requirements on weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Work at computer up to 75% of the time.
  • Able to work though inclement weather conditions that include heat, rain, snow, or cold.
  • Ability to bend, lift, kneel, crawl, and carry up to 50lbs.

Compensation & Benefits

  • 11-month, salaried position (generally position is off late December / through early January)
  • Salary Range $41,500 – $43,000.
