Program Overview and Job Summary: 

The Safety and Training Manager is responsible for developing, upholding, and training for all risk management practices for all departments and programs of Keystone Science School utilizing a collaborative approach with all staff members of KSS. This includes the adherence of all policies and procedures of the KSS Risk Management Plan, Colorado State Child Care Licensure Rules and Regulations, Summit County’s Public Health Department, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation standards, and guidelines within the Pinnacol Safety Program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The main areas of focus for this position are: 

  • • 50% Licensure, ACA, and Risk Management 
  • • 30% Training Development and Facilitation 
  • • 10% Safety Committee Management and Facilitation 
  • • 10% Site Visits and Implementation Oversight 

 

Licensure, ACA, and Risk Management 

  • • Update the risk management plan on an as-needed but at least an annual basis with support from the KSS Safety Committee and the KSS Vision Team; 
  • • Manage KSS’s Colorado State Child Care Licensure for all licensed programs; 

 

 

  • • In partnership with the Operations Manager, manage and oversee program, facility, and kitchen health and safety standards issued by Summit County’s Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment; 
  • • Manage and oversee all aspects of ACA Accreditation for all accredited camp programs; 
  • • Manage the implementation of the Pinnacol Safety Program in collaboration with the HR and Admin Director; 
  • • Serve as the point of contact between KSS Child Care Health Consultant and Keystone Science School; 
  • • Hire and manage seasonal health care workers; 
  • • Maintain health care PPE, first aid materials, and KSS health center; 
  • • Evaluate and assess proper risk management practices and protocols for all programs and departments of Keystone Science School. 

 

Training Development and Facilitation 

  • • Develop and facilitate risk management trainings required under ACA, Colorado State Child Care Licensure, KSS Risk management and Safety Program as part of program training sessions and monthly trainings with all year-round and seasonal staff; 
  • • Develop and facilitate required OSHA or Work Comp trainings in partnership with the HR and Admin Director; 
  • • Partner with Program Managers and Program Coordinators to schedule, train, and evaluate risk management planning within program areas; 
  • • Partner with other staff of the management team to serve as the emergency contact during any school, retreat, and facility rental; 
  • • Conduct certification trainings for staff such as standard precautions and other trainings as needed. 

 

Safety Committee Management and Facilitation 

  • • Serve as the chair of the KSS staff Safety Committee whose goal is to strategically address all aspects of safety at KSS; 
  • • Determine priority areas for Safety Committee to discuss and address; 
  • • Ensure members of the committee have the resources (training, funding, etc.) they need to successfully implement safety measures across the organization. 

 

Site Visits and Implementation Oversight 

  • • Visit programs and sites to ensure safety protocols are adequately implemented; 
  • • Ensure Program Managers understand risk management, licensure, and ACA guidelines and expectations and are implementing appropriately in programs; 
  • • Understand various facility limitations as they relate to safety and work with Program Managers to develop systems to effectively manage risk.

Our required education, experience, and certifications: 

  • • Bachelor’s degree; 
  • • At least 2 years of knowledge and experience within industry risk management (backcountry, front country and classroom); 
  • • At least one year of experience writing and upholding risk management policies for an outdoor education program; 
  • • An understanding of or experience in leading adventure based programs in the backcountry; 
  • • Minimum of 2 years’ experience leading and training staff; 
  • • Ability to clearly communicate the purpose and practices of CO State Child Care Licensure, ACA and risk management to all staff; 
  • • Experience facilitating and coaching positive learning environments, emotional safety, equity and inclusion in an education setting; 
  • • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications or above, from an approved vendor (if certification has been held in the past and can be renewed that is acceptable); 
  • • Age 21+ with a minimum of 5 years driving experience, excellent driving record, and a valid driver’s license; 
  • • Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check. 

 

In addition to the above required talents, our ideal candidate will have these preferred skillsets: 

  • • Experience working outdoor education or camp programs within the state of Colorado; 
  • • CPR and First Aid instructor in good standing with an approved provider; 
  • • Desired computer skills include proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.); 
  • • Comprehension of the Spanish language via written and/or verbal form. 

 

Travel Expectations: 

Limited travel throughout the state of Colorado and Utah.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works outside and drives vehicles in various weather conditions.
