The Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation is responsible for leadership and oversight of 25+ student staff members, plans outdoor recreation programs, and designs curriculum and activities intended to meet guidelines set by leadership staff on program mix, participation targets, and financial parameters that achieve exceptional quality, stewardship, and accountability. Duties will include hiring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluations, payroll and disciplinary processes for student staff, with emphasis on the development and engagement of student staff. Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to: creating recommendations for review and approval any programs to contribute to university/divisional visions, area goals and national best practices; inventory and maintenance of all equipment and supplies to ensure quality, safety, and security; collaborating with department marketing staff to implement publicity strategies and outreach efforts to maximize program awareness, visibility, and participation; implementing program assessment tools to evaluate market needs and interests, participant satisfaction, and overall program feedback; providing financial supervision necessary to achieve budget targets while carrying out best practices in financial stewardship; developing and maintaining relationships with University Recreation and the University of Alabama community as necessary to achieve program success, collaborations, and partnerships; fostering an environment for diversity, inclusion, and outreach through both programs and services offered.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of related experience; OR Master’s degree and one (1) year of related experience. Graduate assistantship and/or intern experience in outdoor recreation programming will be accepted as work experience; this experience must be detailed on the application. Wilderness First Responder or EMT certification required, or ability to attain within six months of hire date. Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.

Skills and Knowledge: Broad base of skills and capacity to train multiple outdoor disciplines such as backpacking, rock climbing, cycling, caving, challenge programming, canoeing, or kayaking. Knowledge of outdoor adventure ethics and best practices. Effective customer relations, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills. Aptitude to prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations, work with limited supervision, supervise and delegate work to student staff, and exercise good judgment.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Recreation Management or similar field of study and two (2) years of progressive experience leading outdoor recreation programs. Knowledge of educational theories, philosophies and application for student development; knowledge of relational/psychological theories of human behavior and applications in a leadership development program; knowledgeable of site management principles and practices; demonstrate critical and creative thinking towards program evaluations; demonstrates effective judgment; bicycle shop experience and skill driving a passenger van are preferred. Advanced first aid and current CPR certification. Relevant professional certifications such as American Canoe Association level III or IV Canoe or Kayaking Instructor, AMGA or PCIA Single Pitch or Climbing Wall Instructor, and Swift Water Rescue. Four (4) or more seasons of wilderness leadership experience preferred. (Season is 4-7 months of continual exposure)

Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 5pm; some evenings & weekends; on-call for emergencies in program area.
