Job Description

The Backcountry Education Manager is responsible for the leadership and execution of Bluebird’s backcountry education courses. Those include Backcountry 1, 2 and 3 courses, Ski with a Mentor, and Advanced Courses. The Manager leads the instructor team, day-to-day management of the program, and continually improving the program. This position reports to the Education Program Director.

Duties

  • Work with Education Director to recruit and hire the backcountry instructor team

  • Schedule both full-time and part-time instructors to ensure that all classes are staffed

  • Co-develop training material with the Education Director

  • Lead instructor training and ensure continual training and instructor improvement

  • Teach courses regularly

  • Use booking software and other digital tools to keep instructor schedules and courses updated

  • Collaborate with guest services and marketing to ensure tight communication

  • Gather customer feedback and consistently iterate on curriculum and education offerings

  • Create a welcoming culture for all Bluebird Backcountry guests

Qualifications

  • Commitment to Bluebird Backcountry’s mission and goals––including a strong desire to welcome and share the backcountry experience with newcomers

  • Self-starter with strong leadership abilities

  • Previous coaching or teaching experience

  • Excellent verbal communication skills

  • Previous experience leading a small team

  • Excellent off-piste skier/rider with at least 5 seasons of backcountry skiing or splitboarding experience

  • AIARE Level 1-Rec avalanche education (or equivalent); Rec-2 AIARE Pro-1 or equivalent strongly preferred

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small grassroots environment

  • A passion for backcountry skiing and sharing the sport!

Timing, Pay and Location

  • This is a full-time winter seasonal position with part-time work during the fall

  • Pay is a weekly salary of $750-$1,000 (depending on experience) during the ski season and an hourly rate of $25 during preseason

  • Bluebird Backcountry is located between Kremmling and Steamboat Springs, Colorado, approximately a 35-minute drive from each. Google maps pin here.
