Reporting to the Academic Dean, this is an on-going full-time, 11-month, staff position with teaching and administrative responsibilities. The person in the position will supervise Outdoor Studies staff including the Director of the Outdoor Program, two Adirondack Semester Assistant Directors, and a secretary.

Teaching: 

• Two for-credit courses per academic year. Fall Semester: A course for the Adirondack Semester. Spring Semester: An Outdoor Studies course.
• Teaching of non-credit bearing skills workshops in keeping with candidate’s particular skill set, e.g.  rock climbing, white kayaking, skiing, etc. and/or leading one outdoor adventure trip per academic year in keeping with candidate’s skills.

Administrative Duties as Director of Outdoor Studies

The Director of Outdoor Studies fulfills department chair duties including, but not limited to:

• Budget oversight and preparation of Adirondack Semester operating and capital budget, budget oversight of Outdoor Program operating and capital budget. Typically, the Director of the Outdoor Program has primary responsibility for preparing and managing the Outdoor Program budgets.
• Attend Dept. Chair meetings and communicate information to Outdoor Studies staff
• Attend regular (monthly or bimonthly) meetings with Academic Dean
• Chairs Outdoor Studies staff meetings
• Shared oversight of half-time administrative assistant with OP director
• Oversight of Outdoor Studies websites, with prime focus on Adirondack Semester and Outdoor Studies website, collaborative oversight of Outdoor Program website
• Determine, in collaboration with Outdoor Program Director, course offerings and prepare course offering spread sheets and respond to all other business relating to course offerings and requirements of the Registrar
• Oversight of all aspects of Outdoor Studies minor: advising, sign forms, degree audits, update University catalog, etc.
• Oversee the hiring of Outdoor Studies staff in collaboration with OP director. Chair Adirondack Semester staff search committees
• Maintains Outdoor Studies files and records
• All other miscellaneous duties carried out by a Department Chair

Administrative Duties as Director of Adirondack Semester

• Marketing and Advertising, run regular info sessions, posters & flyers
• Oversee application and selection process
• Hiring and oversight of ADK semester assistant directors
• Recruitment and oversight of ADK semester instructors and faculty
• Contracts and related paperwork for anyone paid to work for the ADK Semester (contractors, performers, etc.)
• Oversight of ADK Semester site and infrastructure
• Communicate with the Boy Scouts (owners of ADK Semester site at Massawepie Boy Scout camp) over matters concerning the program, including regular renewals/updates of property lease, site, and road maintenance
• Primary responsibility for ADK Semester Program risk management and policies, health and safety of students
• Primary oversight of ADK Semester academic courses and maintaining the academic integrity and spirit of the program
• Communicate with parents of ADK Semester students in periodic mailings/emails, answer questions
• Oversight of ADK Semester internship opportunities: communicate with internship and homestay partners, update information, insurance, payment, etc. 
• In consultation with the Academic Dean and other University officers, holds authority to determine students’ continuation in ADK Semester program.
• Residence at ADK Semester site 1-2 days and nights
• Maintains ADK Semester files and records
• All other miscellaneous duties of a director of an off-campus program

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree
• 3 years of experience in outdoor education/leadership
• Current Wilderness First Responder Certification by time of appointment

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a liberal arts institution
• Experience managing a program or department
• Teaching experience
