Position Description
The Associate Logistics Manager (ALM) is integral to the High Sierra Management Team and overall day-to-day wilderness program management. The ALM is a role model and mentor within the High Sierra community, providing daily leadership, administrative support, and management of the High Sierra basecamp and programs. The Associate Logistics Manager (ALM) reports to the Logistics Manager to support the Program Team in the overall logistical management of Outward Bound California’s High Sierra program.

Areas of oversight include: logistics scheduling, logistics staff training and supervision, equipment acquisition and management, driving, vehicle coordination, inventory management, and food program. Compensation & Schedule
This is an exempt, seasonal salaried position of approximately 6.5 months in length, tentatively scheduled March 18th – Sep 29th
Monthly salary ranges from $3,350 – $3800, depending on experience

Location
This position is located at our High Sierra program base in Midpines, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills 30 miles east of Yosemite National Park.  High summer temperatures can reach 80-100+ degrees Fahrenheit. The basecamp has a main building with an office, warehouse, commercial kitchen, program gear sheds, and weather port living quarters (durable fabric structures).

Outward Bound California (OBCA) is a non-profit that uses challenging experiences in outdoor settings to create social-emotional learning opportunities for our students. We are a part of the Outward Bound USA network of outdoor education programs, with a 50-year history in the US, serving over 40,000 students annually.

We offer a wide range of programs, from 1-day experiences on our San Francisco Challenge Course to multi-day rock climbing and backpacking courses in the High Sierra and Joshua Tree. Education & Work Experience

Possess 2-3 years experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field, a Bachelor’s degree, or any similar combination of education and experience
Have at least 1 year supervisory experience

Physical Requirements

Comfortable with general camping skills and camping in mountain environments
Ability to lift and move a minimum of 60 lbs
Comfortable sitting or standing at a desk or computer 50% of the time or greater
Comfortable working on their feet in logistics warehouse 30% of the time
Able to travel to front country course areas or other OBCA base camps 10% of time
Able to work long hours doing physically and mentally intensive work
Able to act with compassion, maintain composure, exercise sound judgment, and assess and mitigate risk under periods of stress

Required Current Licenses & Certifications (by Start Date)

First Aid & CPR/AED (must meet EMSA requirements for childcare providers [i.e. requires an in-person assessment]
CA Food Handler’s certification
Have had a valid US or Canadian driver’s license for at least five years

Additional Requirements (by Start Date)

21 years of age or older
Able to pass a federal & Live Scan background check, MVR check, and provide current (within the last 4 years) negative TB screen or test results upon hire (cost of all paid for or reimbursed by OBCA)

Bonus if you…

Have prior experience at Outward Bound or other wilderness expeditionary programs (NOLS multi-day course or equivalent)
Competent in driving trailers up to 12ft in length
Have mechanical knowledge of automobiles and experience troubleshooting basic issues
Hold a current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification

Responsibilities

Logistical Support

Responsible for ensuring exceptional warehouse organization, operation, and cleanliness
Oversee and acquire equipment: manage resources across the season to ensure equitable and proper distribution and use by staff and students
Manage all on-site equipment repairs
Support courses in front country setting as needed, including but not limited to: driving transports, mentoring staff, and evacuating students
Assess and adapt logistical systems and paperwork before, during, and after the program season
Collaborate with other departments to meet the needs of students, including Student Services and other Program Teams
Manage and update the Logistics Resources page of Google Sites
Uphold community standards and liaise between community and administrative team
In Logistics Manager absence, oversee (including but not limited to): vehicle scheduling and maintenance; food ordering and food program maintenance; serving as point person of on base, supporting logistics staff, and submitting payroll to Program Director

Logistics Staff Management

Assist with coordination of Logistics Technical and Travel Trainings to ensure training quality and continuity
Manage development process for logistical staff: provide quality feedback; mentor staff in areas of development; conduct regular check-ins
Schedule Logistics Coordinators and interns: prepare and oversee warehouse day task lists for staff not actively supporting courses
Provide ongoing training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for logistics staff

Safety & Risk Management

Ensure logistics  staff compliance with the Outward Bound Field Policies and Procedures (OBFPP) and all Charter Local Operating Policies and Procedures
Oversee food room operations
Provide high quality training and assessment for organization drivers of full ton trucks and trailers
Participate in critical incident response which might require after work hours and could happen during scheduled time off
Uphold Outward Bound’s zero-tolerance policy for incidents of child abuse and neglect. Protecting our minor students against abuse and neglect is of the highest priority

Base Support

In coordination with the Management Team, support all facility needs, including basecamp/warehouse opening and closing, general maintenance, and community gatherings

Business Management

Oversee the procurement, inventory, and budget of gear, first aid, and office supplies throughout the season
Project manage annual, post-season equipment inventories
Process financial transaction in accordance with OBCA expectations and standards
