Job Description

The Odin Falls Associate Program Director of Staff and Training (APD-S&T) works to maintain and expand programming capabilities and align course outcomes with the Outward Bound mission, through leadership and oversight of Oregon’s staff development and training systems.  This position is located in Redmond, OR at the Odin Falls basecamp.  Areas of responsibility include staff development and scheduling, course paperwork and supervision, training design, risk management and mission delivery.  The APD-S&T serves on OSLT, works closely with other members of the NWOBS Admin Team, and directly supervises Odin Falls Course Directors (CD), Instructors and other staff as assigned. The APD-S&T reports directly to the Odin Falls Program Director (PD).  The successful candidate will be expected to have past training and experience in equity, inclusion, and diversity work, ideally pertaining to youth education and partnerships with culturally specific organizations. 

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Program Director, supervise Course Directors, instructors, and other staff as assigned.
  • Work with the OSLT in addressing and implementing strategies to meet program needs, goals, and directional strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Student Services team and Program Coordinators in management of student course paperwork.
  • Participate in supervisory course field visits to provide mentorship and oversight of staff in the field.

Program Quality and Safety Oversight

  • Develop course briefings and debriefings and facilitate as needed.
  • Collaborate with the PD and Associate Program Director of Logistics (APD-L) to develop and refine program policies and procedures, as well as contribute as well as contribute to national policy and procedure revisions.
  • Provide oversight to multiple courses throughout the season.
  • Participate in the 24-hour on-call system and respond to incidents as needed. 
  • Assist in managing incidents and incident reporting as well as participating in safety reviews and incident investigations.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are followed, and staff are held accountable. 
  • Assist in evaluation and implementation of workplace health and safety protocols.

Staff Development

  • Drive the process of creating a seasonal training plan with input from the PD and APD-L.
  • Facilitate trainings as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Washington APD to drive the staff rehire process and work agreements.
  • Create staff schedules and ensure staff are appropriately placed on courses that are scheduled.
  • Collaborate with OSLT to develop and support a basecamp culture that is in alignment with Outward Bound values.
  • Drive the staff development process for Odin staff – facilitate staff check-ins, ensure all staff have IDPs and exit interviews.
  • Support the PD with addressing staff performance challenges.

Secondary Roles & Responsibilities

  • Participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to running, swimming, mountaineering, rock climbing and paddling.
  • Coordinate and host guests and events.  Examples include NWOBS participation in local events, special groups, service projects, board meetings, retreat, etc.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Minimum 3-5 years with Outward Bound or other wilderness expeditionary experience is required. Strong knowledge of Outward Bound history, standards, and programs are preferred. A Bachelor’s degree (not required) in a related field can replace 1 year of required experience.
  • High performing manager with a proven track record of developing, supervising, delegating and resolving conflict.
  • A demonstrated commitment to engaging in equity, inclusion, and diversity efforts (either within a professional or personal setting).
  • Possess skills to inspire, promote, and develop a positive team culture.
  • High level of problem-solving, prioritization, and management of multiple tasks.

  • Certification requirements:  Wilderness First Responder Certification and CPR 
  • Proficient with PC in Windows environment with Microsoft Suite ©.
  • Meet standards for NWOBS driver certification.
