Adventure Programming and Environmental Education Activities
1. Provide opportunities for CSB and SJU students to learn about the outdoor resources of both campuses while instilling lifelong environmental literacy, personal-social skills, leadership development, and engagement with the natural world.
- Direct the CSB and SJU Adventure Programs:

Manage the Outdoor Leadership Centerto provide opportunities for experiential learning, leadership development, and socially-responsible life skills through outdoor experiences.
- Supervise student team running the rental center and leading events
- Manage the Johnnie-Bennie bike share program
- Manage the SJU climbing wall
- Assist with ski trail management and direct the annual Nordic ski race
- Oversee the canoe fleet housed at SJU
- Gear inventory, maintenance and repair
- Advise and guide the Peer Resource Program(PRP)to offer experiences for students to aid in personal development, group development, and positive risk-taking while instilling Leave No Trace ethics.
- Lead and advise PRP in on-campus co-curricular activities
- Advise trip leaders in off-campus adventure trip planning and coordinating.
- Train/mentor college students
- Direct and oversee all aspects of Collegebound, a pre-orientation outdoor experience for incoming first-year students.
- Develop and train Collegebound Coordinator and student leader team
- Participate as leader with one of the Collegebound groups
- Develop and coordinate formal program assessment
- Coordinate and oversee the Challenge Courseas an opportunity for CSB and SJU students, faculty, and staff and community groups to develop team building and leadership skills.
- Facilitate team-building programs for various groups
- Train and develop student-facilitators for program delivery
- Expand outdoor recreational and educational experiences specifically for CSB students at the College of Saint Benedict, working in conjunction with the Institute for Women’s Leadership, Women’s Expeditions, and CSB Campus Recreation.
- Establish learning goals and monitoring criteria for all outdoor education activities directed by this position to assure positive impacts on student development and learning.
- Develop partnerships and collaborations with other departments, programs, and student groups/clubs/organizations.
- Provide opportunities for meaningful volunteer work for CSB and SJU students, including disciplinary-related service.
- Actively participate with Student Development Directors team.
- Actively participate in and attend professional conferences and workshops related to Outdoor Adventure Education.
- Coordinate CSB and SJU Environmental Education programming:
- Develop and coordinate environmental education opportunities for CSB and SJU students through curricular and co-curricular programs.
- Develop and expand educational and research partnerships with the CSB and SJU academic departments and faculty members.
- Teach environmental education lessons for various courses and labs throughout the academic year.
- Plan, organize, and lead seasonal environmental education events for the campus community.
- Work with natural resource or environmentally oriented clubs and organizations on campus to further their involvement in nature and conservation.
2. Assure safety and acceptable risk levels for all adventure programs and environmental education activities and equipment.
- Acquire, oversee and maintain equipment, materials and supplies for outdoor recreational, educational, scientific, and environmental activities.
- Assure all equipment and facilities are in safe working order.
- Establish risk level guidelines and perform risk assessment for program activities to ensure that activities stay within the established risk levels.
- Maintain and update leader manuals and operating procedures for adventure programming and environmental education activities
3. Assist with Outdoor U Community Education.
- Organize, teach, and/or arrange community education events on-site, including annual, monthly, and one-time events.
- Provide opportunities for local landowners, the general public, and conservation groups to learn about and observe the conservation, sustainable forestry, and wildlife protection practices.
Administrative Leadership and Financial Management
1. Oversee all budgets within Adventure Programs.
2. Assist with the development of the Outdoor U annual budget and program plans including goals, tasks, timelines, and reports.
3. Recruit, train, supervise, schedule, and recognize student workers and volunteers.
4. Serve on the Outdoor U Advisory Council CSB and SJU Education, and Community Education committees; lead ongoing development, adaptation, evaluation, and updating of environmental education and outdoor recreation curriculum; maintain and nurture contacts in the education and outdoor recreation field.
5. Performance of related duties as assigned.
Development, Promotion, and Stewardship
1. Promote the outdoors through tours, speaking engagements, and community outreach.
2. Cultivate relationships with donor-members and partners to insure future support.
3. Assist in land stewardship activities including restorations and prescribed burning.
Maintain Comprehensive Vision
1. Develop, in cooperation with the Outdoor U Director, Advisory Council, CSB and SJU Academic Affairs, CSB and SJU Student Development, and appropriate committees, one-year, five-year, and long-term goals for Outdoor U. Suggest innovations which can expand the effectiveness of the Outdoor U mission.
