Oliverian School is an alternative, college-preparatory boarding high school for bright adolescents who have not felt at home in traditional settings. Oliverian teachers seek to inspire a love of learning through a focus on engagement, student choice, and experiential and applied learning. Our adventure program plays a key role in students’ growth and development, challenging them to expand their comfort zone, increase their distress tolerance, build their physical fitness, grow their leadership capacity, and learn to balance their own needs with those of a group.
The ideal candidate will:
- Oversee the school’s adventure program, with a focus on risk management while providing an exciting and challenging array of adventure experiences.
- Plan and teach a variety of adventure classes for students in grades 9 through 12. Classes may focus on activities such as rock climbing, road and/or mountain biking, skiing and/or snowboarding, hiking and backpacking, canoeing, orienteering, and camping skills.
- Be responsible for providing exceptional instruction, balancing challenge and support for students with a wide range of learning profiles and academic background and ability.
- Act as “team lead” for up to 2 students. This role involves active mentorship of each student, being the point person for communication with parents, and collaborating with other team members to develop individualized guidance for each student.
- Maintain excellent record keeping and communication regarding student work.
- In accordance with our residential duty schedule, work every third weekend, leading adventure trips and activities including at least 3 overnight trips per school year. Valid driver’s license required.
- Have a relevant bachelor’s degree, current WFR certification (at a minimum), and extensive field leadership experience.
