Summary

Colorado Outward Bound School seeks to hire a competent, courageous, and creative leader for the Rocky Mountain Program logistics team! The Associate Program Director of Logistics (APD-L) will expand our mission and programming capabilities through the development and implementation of systems that support the Rocky Mountain Program (RMP) operations in the areas of – leadership, budget, transportation, logistics staffing, accommodations, gear, and food. They will support COBS’s strategic plan through the lens of inclusion, equity, and safety. The APD-L will report to the Rocky Mountain Program Director, work closely with other members of the COBS Operations Team, as well as serve on the Program Leadership Team.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Supervises the Logistics Team, including the Logistics Manager, Warehouse Manager, and Kitchen Manager, as well as the Logistics Coordinators, through active supervision, coaching, and management through utilization of the organizational performance tools and policies.
  • Partners with the Human Resources team on hiring, as needed.
  • Collaborates with the RMP Program Director to inform and facilitate capacity building, facility use, and hiring needs related to logistical support for the RMP.
  • Supports the Logistics Manager to create and implement training and development for logistics staff.
  • Works with the training team to ensure logistics and driving training systems and manuals are effective, updated, and maintained.
  • Works with the HR team to ensure accurate recording and tracking of staff training, certifications, records, etc.
  • Partners with HR Generalist, who currently is the main point of contact for vendor relationships, on needs related to logistics purchasing, including phones, gear, food, and medical supplies.
  • Creates meal plans and systems based on the annual course schedule and budget for the RMP, for Open Enrollment and Groups/Pro courses.
  • Approves timecards, sick time and leave requests for logistics staff, and submits payroll for logistics staff bimonthly, and initiates meal stipend payouts during the off season.

 

Vehicle and Transportation Systems

  • Oversees RMP vehicle fleet including regular maintenance of vehicles and recordkeeping documentation, and related equipment like fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and other tools.
  • Delivers driver training curriculum and maintains accurate list of approved drivers in compliance with Outward Bound USA motor vehicle record policy, as well as updates employee files to track completion of associated driver trainings.
  • Ensures compliance with Colorado Department of Transportation regulations and maintains auto insurance for all vehicles and approved drivers, as well as maintains accurate vehicle binders for the RMP vehicle fleet.
  • Completes accident reports, as needed.
  • Forecasts RMP vehicle needs and works with established vendors to secure short-term leases or shuttles during peak season times.

 

Food Systems

  • Develops and implements systems for food and asset storage to reduce waste, damage, and losses.
  • Maintains COBS’ food-serving licenses and advise on regulatory changes.
  • Oversees field and base food inventory and systems and ensures they meet student and staff dietary needs while minimizing waste and maintaining budget criteria.

 

Gear Systems

  • Ensures program gear and equipment meet OBUSA and industry standards for best practices in use and care.
  • Stays informed of manufacturer recalls or safety concerns, and complies with necessary action.
  • Works with the Facilities team to develop and implement basecamp opening/closing schedules and checklists based on program needs and facility functionality.

 

Base Systems

  • Ensures operational systems, facilities, and practices are compliant with Outward Bound policies, as well as state and local public health agencies, and COBS’ policies and procedures.
  • Adherence to safety policies and procedures and safety reporting when incidents occur. Safety
  • Schedules and tracks routine inspections and follows up on issues of non-compliance.   
  • Develops and maintains annual housing document to coordinate and track upwards of 80 permanent and seasonal staff throughout summer programming.
  • Ensures deposits and housing contracts are collected from each staff member.
  • Schedules and performs a walkthrough of the unit as each staff member moves out to determine whether deposit will be refunded or kept as a cleaning fee.
  • Works with Facilities Director to determine a timeline of when dumpsters and portable toilets will be delivered to and taken out of Staff Village.  

 

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in regular and emergency on-call shifts.
  • Serves as a trainer during program training season, delivering driver, logistics, and other training as assigned.
  • Works with APD of Logistics for Southwest Program in Moab to determine areas of cross-program alignment and creates systems and processes for greater efficiency, inventory tracking, training, and sharing of resources.
  • Coordinates and hosts guests and events, for example the Leadville Trail 100, special groups, service projects, board meetings, etc.
  • Completes other duties as assigned. 

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • 3 years of experience in logistics work or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years of team management and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with outdoor recreation and adventure education programs preferred.
  • Personal commitment to, and working knowledge of, diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
  • Experience with resolving conflict in the workplace.
  • Proactive and effective communicator and collaborator.
  • High level of problem-solving, prioritization, and management of multiple tasks with deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain welcoming and professional relationships with clients, partners, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Alignment to COBS’ organizational values of integrity, compassion, excellence, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team member. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically with Excel or other software tracking systems.
  • Previous experience managing a budget preferred.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification or commitment to obtaining it.
  • Excellent driving skills and record.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Based in Leadville with some travel to other COBS’ sites required on occasion.
  • Sitting at a desk or computer 60% of the time or greater. 
  • Ability to participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to camping, backpacking, rock climbing and mountaineering. Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds.  

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Full-time, exempt position with an annualized salary range of $45,000-$50,000; monthly salary range: $3,750-$4,167.
  • The general schedule is 5 out of 7 days/week, weekends and/or holiday work will be required, as well as on-call duties. 
  • Potential onsite housing may be available.
  • Benefits eligibility for medical, dental, and vision insurance, where COBS pays a significant amount toward healthcare premiums and provides employer-paid short- and long-term disability coverage and basic life insurance
  • 20 days of Paid Time Off that accrues throughout the first year, with an additional day of PTO added with consecutive years of service
