Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This director manages all elements of the Challenge Courses at Camp Burgess & Hayward. This includes overseeing operations, safety, and programming of the high ropes course, climbing tower, zipline, and low ropes course. This person trains seasonal staff members to operate the challenge course within our safety standards.

This director also oversees our Retreats program for our weekend rental groups during the fall/winter/spring. This person is responsible for every part of a weekend rental group’s experience, from assisting them through the booking process to ensuring they have an excellent experience during their stay. This is a fulltime, year-round position with on-site housing provided.

CORE EXPECTATIONS:

  1. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Customizes weekend programs to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Works with the Camp Directors and Outdoor Education Director to establish new program activities and expand current programs in accordance with strategic and operating plans. In conjunction with the Executive Director develops and implements marketing strategies including web updates and blogs. 

  1. STAFF ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Trains and supervises the Challenge Course Staff.  Trains and supervises Outdoor Education staff with respect to weekend duties and responsibilities.  Encourages and fosters staff commitment towards achieving goals.

  1. PARTICIPANT ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Builds relationships with participants, group leaders, organizations and community members. Responds to inquiries and solves problems.  Creates a safe and supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new groups, and connects participants to the YMCA’s cause.

  1. FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Works with appropriate staff to ensure program facilities are safe, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive. Assists in the development of Challenge Course facilities and program areas.

  1. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT

Assists in YMCA fund raising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with organizations to strengthen support and build community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Challenge course experience preferred, with additional training provided
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop positive, effective working relationships with staff and other agencies.
  • Effective coaching and teaching skills

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear and walk over grounds that are uneven, hilly, not paved and spread out over 300 acres. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
